본 전시는 Network THE OVEN의 URGENCY 프로젝트의 일환으로 열린다.
UREGECY 프로젝트는 서울 413BETA에서 Studio150(태국-방콕), Tenthaus(노르웨이-오슬로), Gudskul(인도네이사-자카르타)팀이 참여하는 3개의 연속 전시와 싱가포르 아트 뮤지엄에서 이를 한데 묶은 아카이브 전시를 개최하는 장기 프로젝트이다.

Network The OVEN의 URGENCY 프로젝트 두 번째 전시, <URGENCY: Daddy’s Dinner>가 2024년 6월 21일부터 7월 7일까지 서울 영등포구 문래동에 위치한 413BETA(구 공간사일삼)에서 열린다. 이 전시는 이주, 퀴어, 로컬리티의 담론을 가족이 공유하는 식탁 공간 위에 올려놓는 아이디어를 바탕으로 한다.
Network OVEN은 도시 간 연결을 통해 독립 예술 생태계를 활성화하고자 하는 국제적인 네트워크이다. 태국 방콕의 Studio150, 노르웨이 오슬로의 Tenthaus, 인도네시아 자카르타의 Gudskul, 그리고 대한민국 서울의 PACK&413BETA가 결성하였으며, 노르웨이 Moss에서 열린 비엔날레 'Momentum12'를 계기로 시작되었다. URGENCY 프로젝트는 The OVEN의 첫 번째 프로젝트로, 서울의 413BETA에서 3회의 기획 전시와 싱가포르 아트 뮤지엄(SAM)에서의 아카이브 전시로 구성된다.
The OVEN의 멤버인 Studio150, Tenthaus, Gudskul의 전시로 이루어지며, 이들의 프로젝트를 413BETA에서 통합하여 선보인다. 프로젝트의 주제는 지역과 문화적 배경을 넘어 각 커뮤니티가 당면한 독립성의 위기와 글로벌 커뮤니티의 시급한 문제를 탐구하는 것이다. ‘URGENCY’라는 주제어를 중심으로 각 팀의 긴급성과 연결된 물질성을 개별 전시 주제로 풀어내며, 이를 통해 서로 다른 지역과 문화, 공동체 간의 새로운 연결 가능성을 모색한다.
이번 전시 <Daddy’s Dinner>는 Tenthaus의 멤버인 Joanna Chia-yu Lin가 기획하고, Jinbin Chen, Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo, Bobby Yu Shuk Pui가 참여한다. 이들은 각기 다른 아시아 국가에서 노르웨이 오슬로로 이주했으며, 그 과정에서 경험한 문화적 차이와 간격을 바탕으로 이번 전시의 주제에 접근한다.
‘Daddy’s Dinner’는 Tenthaus가 성수자의 날을 기념하는 3년째 프로젝트의 일부로 기획되었다. Tenthaus가 운영하는 오슬로의 전시 공간 Tenthaus에서 먼저 선보였으며, 서울의 413BETA에서는 재구성된 버전을 선보인다. 이번 전시는 이주, 퀴어, 로컬리티의 담론을 가족이 공유하는 식탁 공간 위에 올려놓는 아이디어를 바탕으로 한다. 영상, 조각, 회화, 설치, 오브제 등이 결합된 새로운 형태의 예술 작품을 통해 식탁 주변의 소외된 영역을 물질로 채우며, 동아시아 가부장적 문화의 영향력을 탐구한다. 홍콩, 중국, 대만에서 노르웨이로 이주한 세 명의 아티스트들은 서로 다른 지정학적 차이에도 불구하고 ‘식탁 정치’라고 부르는 역학 관계에 대한 공통된 경험을 협력적으로 풀어낸다.
‘식탁 정치’는 음식을 매개로 애정과 보살핌이라는 친밀함을 권력적 위계로 전환하는 행위이다. ‘Daddy’s Dinner’에 포함된 작품들이 형성하는 긴장감은 이러한 가부장적 문화가 만들어내는 근본적인 불안과 불균형적인 권력 관계를 드러낸다. 식탁을 중심으로 아래와 위, 주변과 중심의 이야기들을 그러모으는 전략을 상상한다.
Bobby Yu Shuk Pui는 영상과 사진을 통해 가족이라는 단위를 음식 레시피로 접근한다. 모자이크 사진과 함께 7분 분량의 영상으로 가족의 뉘앙스를 우정으로 재맥락화한다. 이는 식탁 아래 소외된 장소를 떠도는 유령을 탐색하며, 가족이라는 단위의 고정된 연대와 소속감을 환기시킨다.
Jinbin Chen은 가족 생활의 외형적인 형태를 관찰하고 이를 대상으로 삼아 가족 간의 보이지 않는 위계를 담아낸다. 겉으로 보기에 평화로운 관계 속에서 개별 존재들이 조용하고 암묵적인 방식으로 좌절하는 간극을 드러내고자 한다.
Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo는 가족 간의 식사 장소에 늘 존재하는 테이블, 의자, 식탁보와 같은 사물들을 재배치하여 전시장을 일종의 ‘가족 드라마’의 무대로 전환시킨다. 이를 통해 가정이라는 관념적인 공간과 이를 둘러싼 의식의 역학 관계가 어떻게 구축되는지 탐구한다.
이러한 일련의 작업물들은 세 아티스트를 묶어내는 유대의 방식이자 시적인 탐구이다. 식탁이라는 사물과 음식이라는 문화을 중심으로 문화적 배경과 공동체 간의 새로운 연결성을 재배치하고, 관객들이 서로 다른 문화와 경험을 이해하고 공감하는 데 기여하기를 기대한다.
Network The OVEN held the second exhibition under the UNRGENCY project, <Daddy's Dinner> will be held at 413BETA in Mullaedong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul from 21 June to 7 July 2024. The exhibition is based on the idea of placing the discourse of migration, queerness and locality on the family dining table.
Network OVEN is an international network that aims to activate independent ecosystems of art world through connections of different cities. Founded by Studio150 (Bangkok, Thailand); Tenthaus (Oslo, Norway); Gudskul (Jakarta, Indonesia); and PACK&413BETA (Seoul, South Korea) the network originated from the Momentum12, Biennale in Moss, Norway.Urgency is The OVEN's first project, consisting of three exhibitions at 413BETA and an archival exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM).
The project features exhibitions by Network OVEN members Studio150, Tenthaus and Gudskul, showcasing their projects in a unified format at 413BETA. The project's theme delves into the crisis of independence facing each community and the urgent issues of the global community, transcending regional and cultural boundaries. Centered on the theme of "URGENCY," each team's individual exhibition explores materiality connected to their sense of urgency, seeking new possibilities for interaction between different regions, cultures and communities.
Daddy’s dinner is a collaborative project curated by Tenthaus in celebration of Pride Month for the third consecutive year. The exhibition was first presented at Tenthaus, an exhibition space in Oslo and is now showing a reconfigured version at 413BETA. The exhibition is based on the idea of placing the discourse of migration, queerness, and locality on the family dining table. Through new forms of artworks that combine video, sculpture, painting, installation, and objects, the exhibition materializes the marginalized spaces around the dining table and explores the influence of East Asian patriarchal culture. The three artists, who have immigrated to Norway from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, collaboratively unravel their shared experiences of power dynamics, which they call ‘dinner-table politics’, despite their different geopolitical backgrounds.
‘Dinner-table politics’is the act of transforming the intimacy of affection and care, mediated by food, into a hierarchical power structure. The tensions created by the artworks in Daddy's Dinner unveil the underlying anxieties and unbalanced power relations that stem from this patriarchal culture. The exhibition employs a strategy of gathering stories of above and below, periphery and center, with the dining table as the focal point.
Bobby Yu Shuk Pui delves into the concept of family as a unit through food recipes, utilizing videos and photographs. A seven-minute video, accompanied by a mosaic of images, recontextualizes the nuances of family as a form of friendship. It does so by exploring the ghosts that roam the neglected spaces beneath the dining table, evoking the fixed solidarity and sense of belonging that characterize the family unit.
Jinbin Chen discovers the hidden hierarchies that exist within families by observing and analyzing the outward forms of family life. By examining seemingly peaceful relationships, it aims to uncover the subtle and unspoken frustrations experienced by individual members within the family unit.
Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo transforms the familiar setting of the family dining table into a stage for exploring the complexities of its relationships. By rearranging the everyday objects found in this space, such as the table, chairs and tablecloth, the project creates a unique exhibition that serves as a platform for examining the dynamics of family life.
This exhibition brings together the works of three artists to explore the complexities of family, identity, and culture through a poetic lens. It serves as a platform for forging new connections between communities from different cultural backgrounds.
